Food For Thought Session 2

We're learning how to read food labels.

  • We learnt to find the 100gram column on the nutrition table on the packet of lots of breakfast cereals.
  • Fat needs to be less than 10g
  • Sugar needs to be less than 10g, the exception being if they have any bits of dried fruit in them
  • Sodium needs to be less than 400mg
  • Dietary fibre is good, (it helps clean our intestines, it fills us up and it helps us 'poop') it needs to be more than 5g
  • Energy is good, we need energy but if we put too much in, we get fat. Energy needs to be moderated by how much exercise we do.  We need the right balance. We want to pick the cereal that has the lowest energy rating.
We discovered that weekbix and porridge are the only cereals that are healthy and nutritious.
