Our New World Visit

Easy Blog Photo
It was great to be able to visit New World and practice our label reading skills in a real-life setting.  Our educator Nova was fantastic both at school and with us at New World - we've all learnt lots and it's now up to us whether we take on this learning and choose to live healthy lives.

Huge thanks to Rachelle (Matt's mum), Faith (Robbie's mum), Petra (Jacob's mum) and Kirsty (Charlotte's mum) for coming with us to support us there.

We spent about an hour identifying healthy and unhealthy options for five different groups of foods. Knowing the healthy levels for sugars, fats, energy, calcium and dietary fibre AND not getting tricked by the packaging meant we are better equipped to make healthy choices, yay.
We were all given a snack box container by one of the New World staff - we had to be able to name one healthy choice and one unhealthy choice.  Wow - thanks!

Food For Thought Session 2

We're learning how to read food labels.

  • We learnt to find the 100gram column on the nutrition table on the packet of lots of breakfast cereals.
  • Fat needs to be less than 10g
  • Sugar needs to be less than 10g, the exception being if they have any bits of dried fruit in them
  • Sodium needs to be less than 400mg
  • Dietary fibre is good, (it helps clean our intestines, it fills us up and it helps us 'poop') it needs to be more than 5g
  • Energy is good, we need energy but if we put too much in, we get fat. Energy needs to be moderated by how much exercise we do.  We need the right balance. We want to pick the cereal that has the lowest energy rating.
We discovered that weekbix and porridge are the only cereals that are healthy and nutritious.

Life Education

We all got into height order and figured out which row we are sitting in. We said 'hi' to our talking partners, luckily we had an even number of people. "Howdy partner!" We practiced giving our partner a compliment and then how to acknowledge it, "you're looking mighty fine today", "awwww, thanks very much"! We are super special people to be allowed in the Life Education classroom. We learnt a super special chant about this. You're a super special person There's nobody like you You're wonderful and amazing And everyone else is too. We are here to learn about and celebrate how special and unique we all are.

Wee Truck Visits Great 8

Today we were super lucky to have Linnea's grandparents bring along their vintage Chrysler truck to show us. It was manufactured in 1926 and we quickly worked out that it is therefore 89 years old! We were all given the opportunity to hop in and make the horn go, a-ooo-ger!!! It was fascinating to notice the wheels were wooden and that there were no windows in the doors. The top speed is about 70km/h which means when travelling they need to pull over to let others pass. We talked about how this is being a courteous driver. 'Wee Truck' and Linnea's grandparents are going to a rally over Easter so keep an eye out for more wonderful vintage vehicles out and about in the Manawatu.
